5 of the most random things I have learned about pop culture from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s since I started my show!

Since I started my podcast 2.5 years ago (almost 3 now!) I feel like I am starting to re-educate myself on things I am very passionate about.  So, for today's blog post, I thought we could focus on 5 of the most random things I have learned about pop culture from doing the show!  With that said, let's dive in!

#5:  When I did the show about My Little Pony, I brought up that Sandy Duncan (who was in the television show, the Hogan Family) provided the voice of one of the characters in a MLP television special.  What I learned during my research for that show is that there is a band called Sandy Duncan's Eye!  There has long been a rumor that Sandy Duncan has a glass eye, when in fact, she had surgery behind her eye.  So, there is no glass eye, however, that didn't stop a group from using this myth for a band name!  I can't quite tell if they are still a band anymore, but you can find some general information here:  Sandy Duncan's Eye Discography  You can listen to the My Little Pony episode HERE.

#4:  One of my favorite episodes of the show was when I discussed some of the now-defunct mall and big box stores.  One of the stores I talked about was called Rave, but I learned during my research that the original name of the store was, in fact, Rave 4 Real.  How lame and awesome is that?!  You can listen to the full episode HERE.

#3:  In episode #37, we talked about some of the defunct restaurant chains of the United States.  I learned a ton about restaurants of yesteryear but one fact stood out to me about the now defunct chain, Chi Chis:  In 2003 the company filed for bankruptcy and just one month later, the largest hepatitis outbreak in US History occurred at a Chi Chi’s restaurant via contaminated green onions which led to 660 infections and 4 deaths.  Yikes!  You can learn more about Chi Chi's and other classic restaurants HERE.

#2:  I didn't realize how hard it was for Michael Bolton to get his foot in the door when it came to his music career.  Apparently he had to get permission to drop out of school, had tons of failed albums, etc. before he finally rose to fame.  You can learn more about Michael Bolton's fascinating story HERE.

#1:  Okay, okay this wasn't necessarily new information to me but it was the FIRST time I ever formally shared my knowledge about one of the most asinine songs of all time - "Dot Com" by Usher.  Now, please keep in mind that I love Usher and so did my sister.  He is a fantastic singer, dancer and performer but this song was so ridiculous that it was really hard for me to record myself reciting the lyrics to this song.  You can learn more about Usher and the song "Dot Com" HERE.
